Winemaker Notes

A bright yellow infused by a green iridescence, this wine is intensely aromatic, delivering a surprising amount of white fruit complemented by notes of nuts. It is flavorsome in the mouth, well balanced and great personality. This is undoubtedly a truly elegant, highly distinctive wine.

Pair with: appetizers, salads, fish, rice dishes, foie gras, and goat cheese.

COMMENTARY: What can one say about Garnacha Blanca? Aside its current status as a cool wine for aficionados, who has ever tried this wine? There is little history in the New World—or the Old World as well—of wine drinkers imbibing this wine, and for all of the wine that I drink, I have only enjoyed this grape variety a few times. The 2013 Viñas del Vero La Miranda de Secastilla Garnacha Blanca is simply delicious wine. TASTING NOTES: This wine is surprisingly fresh, despite its vintage. Showing a hint of dried earth maturation, its aromas, and flavors of fresh fruit and dried citrus should pair it perfectly with seared wild sea scallops in a brown butter and wine reduction sauce. (Tasted: September 12, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Vinas del Vero Jose Ferrer - Winemaker Winery Image
This tucked-away valley is Viñas del Vero's latest wine discovery. Secastilla sits in an exceptional enclave in the northernmost part of Somontano and the agroclimatic conditions there are particularly suited to growing vines as they produce a distinctly Mediterranean microclimate. Here, on stony hillsides at over 700m above sea level we have 48 hectares planted with organically grown vines including very old Garnacha stock that we have recovered. Garnacha is a traditional Secastilla variety and we have planted new Garnacha vines too, as well as Syrah.

Viñas del Vero has been working in this area for several years now. Since we discovered it we have recovered the old Garnacha vines and planted new ones such as Syrah and Parraleta that adapt very well to this unique place. It is interesting that although this was the traditional wine-growing part of Somontano in antiquity, the area was passed over while the denomination of origin was being introduced. Viñas del Vero has been a firm believer in the area's potential, however, and is currently the only winery in Somontano that makes wine from grapes grown in the Secastilla valley.

The “Secastilla Valley” estates (‘pagos’) are located in the far north-eastern edge of Somontano and share a special “Mediterranean microclimate”. The area’s relative altitude and particular orientation mean that it enjoys a high number of hours of sunlight, which helps the fruit ripen. The whole area is dry and the soil is loamy sand and quite stony.

Producing full-bodied white wines, Grenache Blanc can be unctuous and soft or floral and fresh. Some of the finest examples are terroir-driven, age-worthy wines. It is a key ingredient in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and many white blends across southern France and NE Spain. Somm Secret—Grenache Blanc plays a key role in the vins doux naturels of Rivesaltes and a subsidiary role in those of Banyuls and Maury.

Literally meaning ‘under the mountain,’ Somontano is a diverse region located in the foothills of the south central Pyrenees. Heavy winter rains supply the region with water even throughout the summer.
