Winemaker Notes

A rich and beguiling treat. With the blend of Garnacha Tintorera and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is opaque and dark and intensely coloured. The fruit is dark and of the forest, blackberries and boysenberries. Smooth spicy tannins add structure and leave the wine. Grilled meat would be the perfect match.

RP 90
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2004 Al Lado de la Casa is sourced from a single parcel composed of 85% Monastrell, 10% Syrah, and 5% Tintorera. The wine was barrel fermented and raised in new French oak. Dark ruby-colored, the nose expresses nuances of pain grille, pepper, loamy earth, blueberry and a hint of raisins. This is followed by an intense, concentrated wine with a firm structure and lengthy finish. Cellar this attractive effort for 2-3 years and enjoy it through 2020.

Vina Al Lado de la Casa, Spain
Vina al la de la Casa is made and owned by Bodegas Castano and Vila Viniteca. The Castano family has dedicated their lives to winemaking for generations. In the mid eighties they began to invest their efforts into making high quality wines. Today it is one of the most innovative and successful wineries in the area.

The property is located 700 metres above sea level, and due to a microclimatic phenomenon, rain falls here very seldom throughout the year. Red grape varieties grown include Monastrell, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Merlot, Garnacha, Tintorera and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Known for its bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy red wines, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Most planted and respected is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
