Winemaker Notes

This medium-bodied dry Riesling has lovely flavors of peach and stone, with a hint of apricot. Nicely balanced acidity gives it a juicy grip.

It is an excellent match for classic continental-style cooking, especially with dishes that feature freshwater fish, chicken and pork.

Wine Enthusiast
Lush mango and guava notes lend a sunny, tropical feel to this Riesling. Dry and lavishly textured, it’s concentrated in fruit, yet maintains a mineral-edged vitality that’s quite refreshing. It offers remarkable quality and consistency at a bargain price.

Villa Wolf, Germany
Villa Wolf Erni Loosen, Proprietor of Villa Wolf Winery Image

Famed Mosel Riesling winemaker Ernst Loosen purchased the Villa Wolf Estate in the Pfalz village of Wachenheim in 1996. Of course Villa Wolf produces excellent, mineral-driven dry rieslings from the estate’s sandstone, limestone and basalt soils. But its focus on Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris have generated more attention. The Pinot Noir Rose in particular is downright addictive. All of the Villa Wolf wines are clean, pure, bright, focused and extremely food-friendly. They also represent superb value. Erni Loosen calls his second winery “True Pfalz”.

Recognized as a top quality grape here since the Middle Ages, Germany retains its high reputation as a premier source of the finest Riesling. Heavily planted throughout the Rheingau and Mosel, Riesling responds splendidly to these regions’ extreme climatic and topographic challenges. Cold-hardy enough to survive freezing winters, and sturdy enough to withstand the warm sun, Riesling has enough natural acidity to maintain balance, even in wines with the highest levels of residual sugar. While high quality is possible in all points of the sweet to dry spectrum, Riesling typically produces wine with relatively low alcohol, high acidity, steely minerality, stone fruit, citrus, spice and floral notes. With age, Riesling can become truly revelatory, developing unique, complex aromatics, often with a hint of petrol.
