Winemaker Notes

Golden straw hues. Lively aromatics, mango, guava, a touch of ginger, apple, and honey. Playful grassy element, candied Meyer lemon with anise with tart lime, pithy grapefruit, and bright acidity

COMMENTARY: Some of the best white wines made in the USA can be found in that $20 to $30 range, and are seldom called Chardonnay. The 2017 Twomey Sauvignon Blanc delivers plenty of satisfaction for the $$$s. TASTING NOTES: This wine deftly combined from two AVAs—Napa County and Sonoma County—is perfectively crafted to show the tropical fruits (mango, pineapple, and others nuances) and the citrus, herb side of the grape variety. Pair its beautiful aromas and flavors with a lemongrass accented Vietnamese chicken and rice dish. (Tasted: May 11, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

The Duncan Family

Twomey was founded 20 years ago by the Duncan Family of Silver Oak to make dynamic, vineyard-focused wines. Brothers David, Tim, Kevin and Mike founded Twomey Cellars as a Duncan family venture in 1999. Proprietors David and Tim oversee day-to-day operations at the winery.

The Philosophy

Over the years, their passion for Pinot Noir opened exciting new doors to cool climate vineyard opportunities. With each vineyard, the goal is always to craft wines that reflect a delicate balance among a vineyard’s unique micro-climate, soil profile and the human hand—all while capturing the classic character of their respective growing regions.

Sustainable Twomey

Farming with long-term respect for the environment plays a critical role in fruit character and quality. With wines focused on capturing the essence of place, their farming techniques focus on proven methods—from advanced water conservation technologies to the use of cover crops, fish-friendly farming and integrated pest management—that protect the land for future generations.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.
