Winemaker Notes

Sexy Beast, with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a lovely deep purple color. This wine springs forth on a bouquet of lavender, creosote, warm plums, cranberries and hot oil, a lovely minty floral Asian spice follows. The palate is where this wine really shines as it bursts forth with a build, detail and density rarely seen from a McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon. There are very intelligent tannins at play here and they hold the varietal character right to the end, the fruit fits so beautifully into the structure.

Critical Acclaim

WS 91
Wine Spectator
Ripe and supple, offering a velvety mouthful of blueberry, dark plum and currant flavors, shaded with hints of smoky meat and roasted herbs. Finishes with intensity.
RP 91
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Very deep purple-black in color, the 2010 Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon is profoundly scented of creme de cassis, cloves and cedar with underlying nuances of baker's chocolate, mint and pencil lead. Very full bodied and packed with taut, dense cassis flavor, it has a solid foundation of firm grainy tannins and crisp acid, finishing long and clean. Still very young and tight, consider drinking it 2013 to 2019+.

Two Hands Wines, , Australia
Two Hands
Two Hands Wines was founded in 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz. Their aim was, and still is, to produce the best possible wines from prized Shiraz growng regions throughout Australia. "Quality without compromise" is a core value that drives all decisions from fruit and oak selection to packaging and promotion. Winemaker Matt Wenk has been with Two Hands since 2002 and, together with Michael Twelftree, oversees every aspect of the winemaking process. Their flagship Shiraz, Ares, represents the very best parcels in each vintage and is selected through an intense barrel classification process. This blend of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale Shiraz displays the incredible depth of flavor and balance that are hallmarks of this wine.

Monterey

View all wine

A geographic and climatic anomaly among wine regions, Monterey is a part of the expansive Central Coast AVA and contains five smaller sub-appellations, including the popular Santa Lucia Highlands. Rainfall is extremely low, necessitating the use of irrigation from the Salinas River for successful grape-growing, while harsh Pacific winds and coastal fogs drastically cool and dampen the region in the north.

In the cooler districts of Monterey, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling produce wines with a crowd-pleasing combination of ripe, juicy fruit and crisp acidity. Warmer subzones are home to fleshy, fruit-forward Bordeaux Blends comprised primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Other Red Blends

View all wine

With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to create complex wines with many different layers of flavors and aromas, or to create more balanced wines. For example, a variety that is soft and full-bodied may be combined with one that is lighter with naturally high acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
