Planted in 1944, the Dogtown Vineyard is farmed by Turley Wine Cellars. This head-trained, own-rooted vineyard is technically within the Clements Hills AVA, which has more topography than the rest of Lodi. The rolling hills are composed of clay & volcanic soils, and vine yields are extremely low. The wine is characterized by dark red fruit flavors, spice and black tea.

A Zinfandel that I have always loved from Turley is their Zinfandel from the Dogtown Vineyard. The 2014 Zinfandel Dogtown Vineyard, from the up-and-coming Lodi AVA, tips the scales at 15.4 % alcohol. It is a sexy, lush, full-bodied Zinfandel, oozing with fruit and character. The wine has underlying loamy soil notes and spice box, as well as copious quantities of raspberry, black cherry and briary, mountain red fruits. It is spicy and full-bodied, with an opulent, plush and layered texture. This is irresistible. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. This vineyard was planted in volcanic and clay soils in 1944.

Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley and makes forty-seven wines, the vast majority of which are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. By focusing on old vine vineyards in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture.
All of Turley’s vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or somewhere in the process, and the winery uses all natural yeasts in the fermentations.
Turley aims to be stewards of some of California’s most distinctive vineyards, producing authentic wines that reflect their heritage.
