Winemaker Notes

Deep purple in color, Redigaffi offers luscious layers of blueberry jam, ripe plum and blackberry, followed by voluptuous notes of dark chocolate, licorice, black pepper, vanilla and incense. Full-bodied and lush on the palate with polished tannins and an extra-long finish, Redigaffi is one of Italy’s greatest Merlots. A true masterpiece.

James Suckling
Compelling aromas of chili pepper, nuts, beeswax and dark fruits with dried strawberries. Hints of black olives and meat. Full body with extremely thick, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. This is layered and so structured, with fabulous length and density. Savory. Chocolate powder at the end. This needs at least three or four years of bottle age. A triumph for the vintage. Pure merlot.

Decanter
The 2012 has a lively, vibrant and fragrant nose of violets and roses intermingled with woodsmoke and charred oak. It's less voluptuous and more harmonious on the palate than the 2011, and the tannins are ripe and finely integrated. Little elements of green herb intertwine with black fruits and plums to create some bright, contrasting flavours. Owner Stefano Frascolla says it is' too politically correct', but I love its balance and harmony within the context of a rich, hedonistic Merlot. Drinking Window 2018 - 2038

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The epic 2012 Redigaffi (100% Merlot) shows amazing depth and a great sense of inner energy and seductive charm. The wine is soft and yielding with ripe layers of cherry, blackberry and cassis that slowly morph into savory spice, leather and tobacco. This Merlot boldly promotes its all-Italian characteristics of Mediterranean shrub and wild sage that ground the wine in a sense of place. The warm vintage has shaped soft tannins and thick, penetrating extraction that moves slowly over the palate. Give this beautiful wine a few more years to find its footing and lose its baby fat.

Wine Enthusiast
One of Italy's most acclaimed Merlots, this concentrated wine opens with scents of black currants, cedar, sage and espresso. The firmly structured but polished palate delivers dried black cherry, black pepper, coffee and licorice alongside a backbone of velvety tannins. Drink 2017–2022.

Tua Rita, Italy
Tua Rita Winery Image

Rita Tua and her husband, Virgilio Bisti, bought approximately 37.5 acres of land in 1984 and planted it with Cabernet and Merlot. They later purchased an additional 17.5 acres of land, bringing the total estate to 55 acres, of which about 45 are planted with vines. The winery released its first vintage in 1992, and soon began receiving praise and accolades from wine enthusiasts worldwide for its rich, full-bodied wines. In just five short years, its 100% Merlot had achieved cult-like status, receiving outstanding ratings from the world’s most prestigious wine critics and publications. Critic Robert M. Parker Jr. said the 1999 Redigaffi was “as close to perfection as a wine can get.” The following year, he gave the 2000 Redigaffi a perfect 100 score. The winery’s Bordeaux blend, Giusti di Notri, also garners near-universal praise. Little wonder that Tua Rita’s wines are considered among the most difficult to find in Italy. Tua Rita is located in Suvereto, a small medieval town in the Tuscan province of Livorno, on the coast south of Bolgheri. The winery lies at just 300 feet above sea level, on clay, silty soil. Luca D'Attoma, the estate’s winemaker, keeps yields to a minimum to ensure concentration of flavors. The estate’s total annual production is currently just 3400 case
