    Winemaker Notes

We created Double T wines to share quality estate lots in a truly fun wine at a great price. As for the name, many of our vines are trained on a quadrilateral cordon trellis, commonly known as “Double T.” The vine is pruned and trained so that its branches, or cordons, form four arms resembling two Ts, hence the name. Double T also refers to the “Two Teethes” of which there are now two sets actively involved in our winery: John and Janet and now their son Lorenzo and daughter Hailey.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot provide the backbone for this lovely blend. Malbec brings color, red fruit characters and a hint of floral. Merlot adds a lively spice and herbal character with Cabernet Franc offering finesse and a peppery perfume. Aromas of lush, summer blackberries, brambly cassis, complemented by white pepper, clove, and baking spices are framed by sweet vanilla oak. Juicy, ripe, black cherry and blackberry flavors excite the palate, and the wine finishes long, wrapped in cedar, cinnamon, and clove.

Designed to pair perfectly with backyard parties, Double T Red will shine with grilled meats complemented with sautéed mushrooms, thyme and black pepper. For an interesting spin, serve with pepper crusted Ahi tuna. For the vegetarians in your life, pair with eggplant parmesan.

    Blend:Blend : 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Petit Verdot, 13% Malbec, 8% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc

Built in 1886, John and Janet Trefethen began restoring what is today the Trefethen winery in 1973. A national historic landmark and the only wooden gravity-flow winery in the Napa Valley, Trefethen is also one of Napa's largest estate wineries, with its 600 acres of vineyards surrounding the winery. The Trefethen family creates Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Riesling as well as limited quantities of Library Selection Chardonnay, Library Selection Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
