Winemaker Notes

In 1770 the monks of the Abbey of Montserrat settled in the elsDesterrats property as penance. The area was renowned for its harsh climate and tough conditions.

Their work: To cultivate the land to provide food for the diocese.

Their legacy: The discovery of a new terroir and a fine wine.

The legend: Large barrels mysteriously disappeared. Some said that they were taken up to heaven by the angels.

The most heavily grown Mediterranean red variety in the world, it produces excellent red and rosé wines which benefit from its greasy and sensual tannin.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The one red from the Pallars subzone of Costers del Segre is the 2014 Purgatori, a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha and Syrah from high-altitude vineyards on sandy and limestone soils in a very dry and healthy zone. It fermented in stainless steel and matured for 15-18 months in barrique, 40% of them new. They are planting some of the ancestral recovered grape varieties here, especially the one they call Gonfaus, coplanted with Garnacha and Cariñena (which is already used in a tiny percentage in the wine), and they are using less and less Syrah, perhaps 10% in this vintage. I found it neatly balanced, intense with good ripeness but elegant, a particularly cool vintage in the zone, with a longer ripening and a late harvest that might have resulted in fresher wines. The oak also feels nicely integrated, with just some smoky and spicy undertones and a faint lactic touch. I found it fresher, more elegant and balanced than the 2013, which was already impressive.

A layered and rich wine with dried berry, chocolate and spice. Full body, found tannins and a flavorful finish. Balanced and not overdone. Garnacha, carignan and syrah.

At present this is a blend of Carinyena, Garnatxa and Syrah grown in the olive country of Les Garrigues, producing tiny yields from deep, silty-clay soils. It’s dark black-red in colour, with less mentholated aromas than those of Gonfaus but there is nonetheless a resinous, almost Napa-like quality to the lush, deep black fruits. There’s a mass of sweet fruit on the palate at present with much less acidity than Gonfaus, so I can see the logic for considering it as a potential blending addition. The tannins are soft and gentle, and there are some chicory-pine complexities to provide resolution for the sweet fruits; some spiciness too.

Known for its bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy red wines, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Most planted and respected is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
