Winemaker Notes

This Cabernet Sauvignon has ripe aromas of plum, cherry and a hint of white pepper. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, and toasty, French oak are exactly what you would anticipate in this classic Napa Valley Cabernet. The wine’s smooth body and structure are evident, with the acidity acting as a building block in unison with the tannins giving a full and bold palate.

WE 94
Wine Enthusiast
A 100% varietal wine, this is an impressive effort, mingling together rich and forward flavors of blackberry cobbler and chocolate around a softly layered yet richly woven core of concentration and power. Decadent, it finishes with a welcoming smoky hint.
JS 92
James Suckling
Aromas of dried orange, currant and blueberry with some crushed stone. Full body, firm and silky tannins. Drink in 2020.
V 92
Vinous
Stewart's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a gorgeous wine that will appeal most to readers who enjoy unctuous, full-throttle Cabernets. Racy, powerful and intense with loads of dark cherry, mocha and exotic spice flavors, shows the most sumptuous side of the vintage. As is so often the case, the Stewart Cabernet is flamboyant yet also well-proportioned.

Michael Stewart came to the Napa Valley in 1999, intent on making high-quality wines that meet the expectations Napa Valley wines demand. His first venture was the purchase of Juliana Vineyards, a 1,000 acre vineyards in the Napa Valley appellation. He also sought out the best vineyards, the best grapes, and finally the world-renowned oenologist Paul Hobbs to start the Stewart brand. Today, 13 years after Michael came to Napa Valley, his son, James and daughter, Caroline have joined the family business

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wines. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
