Winemaker Notes

Our efforts to create fine Pinot Noir in 1999 began in the vineyard. Timely manipulation of the vines' canopy positioned the shoots so that at any given time, sunlight touched one third of the clusters. In addition, weak shoot removal promoted more even ripening. At harvest, small, tightly packed clusters of very small berries (1 gram) were gently destemmed. During fermentation, evenly ripened fruit facilitated the extraction of Pinot Noir's seductive yet reluctant flavor components. Finally, a slow, anaerobic (without racking) maturation of fruit and wood in mostly new French oak barrels provided synergy and complexity. Aromas of rose petals, minerals, and cinnamon spice give way to flavors of black cherries, red currants, lingering spices, and, finally, Pinot Noir's silky finish. -Ted Seghesio, Winemaker

Image of winery

Established in 1895, when Edoardo Seghesio planted his first Zinfandel vineyard in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, Seghesio Family Vineyards produces wines that honor the history of Sonoma and the Seghesio family. Seghesio Family Vineyards' 300 acres in the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River valleys represent some of the oldest vineyards and proprietary clones. With a passionate belief that wine is made in the vineyard, Seghesio pairs a century of experience on these treasured sites with aggressive farming techniques. True to their oldest plantings, Seghesio concentrates on Zinfandel, Italian varietals and Pinot Noir. Ted Seghesio is the winemaker.
