    Winemaker Notes

Arneis' legacy as a difficult varietal to master in the vineyards of Piedmont is due mainly to its thin-skinned, compact clusters. These clusters are more susceptible to breakdown during inclement weather, a phenomenon that very much compromises wine quality. That said, our ally in California, is the climate. Our Arneis originates predominately from the fog shrouded Russian River valley, which is generally cool but not wet and provides an advantage with this fickle varietal. Picking into small bins and gentle whole cluster pressing, yields juice lower in astringency and more stable in color. After a prolonged cold fermentation, the wine is aged in stainless steel, not oak, a stylistic decision designed to enhance Arneis' pear, melon and anise qualities.

Established in 1895, when Edoardo Seghesio planted his first Zinfandel vineyard in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, Seghesio Family Vineyards produces wines that honor the history of Sonoma and the Seghesio family. Seghesio Family Vineyards' 300 acres in the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River valleys represent some of the oldest vineyards and proprietary clones. With a passionate belief that wine is made in the vineyard, Seghesio pairs a century of experience on these treasured sites with aggressive farming techniques. True to their oldest plantings, Seghesio concentrates on Zinfandel, Italian varietals and Pinot Noir. Ted Seghesio is the winemaker.
