Winemaker Notes

Bright, clear yellow color. Dry with a distinct aromas of citrus and flowers, combined with hints of smoke and minerals from the volcanic soil. Fulll-bodied, well-balanced with intense flavors and long finish.

The 2014 Assyrtiko is unoaked and comes in at 13% alcohol. It is surprisingly nice as it expands in the glass; "surprisingly" because it started a bit dull and closed, and then opened nicely. It began to show more lushness and a bit more persistence on the finish. While not seriously concentrated, it does rather well for itself and finishes with a burst of tasty fruit. Overall, this shows beautifully, fresh, tasty and friendly. Note: there is a new label (at least in the USA) for this wine, now which contains a basket-shaped grape vine and the heading "volcanic terroir."

The remains of an ancient volcano that erupted around 1600 BC, Santorini is one of the southern Cyclades islands and is most recognized for its white wines made from the fruity and mineral-rich, Assyrtiko.

Assyrtiko

View all wine

A crisp white variety full of zippy acidity and with a striking mineral character, Assyrtiko comes from the volcanic Greek island of Santorini, but is grown increasingly wide throughout the country today. The reasons for its popularity are plentiful: it retains its acid and mineral profile in a hot climate, blends well with other grapes and can also withstand some age. Flavors often found in Assyrtiko and its blends include lemon zest, passion fruit, pineapple, flint and fennel. It is versatile when matched with food; try it with oysters, shrimp, salmon as well as grilled chicken, tomatoes and asparagus.
