Winemaker Notes

The 2016 His Vermentino is a beautiful example for any orange wine lover or novice. It is effusively aromatic with the exotic aromatic qualities of Vermentino. The wine bursts with white florals, grilled herbs and rose water. The palate delivers savory saline tones, stone fruits and refreshing acidity.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Pale orange in color, the 2016 Vermentino "His" Las Brisas Vineyard has a very savory nose of yeast extract and lightly browned toast with hints of rose petals and orange peel plus a waft of stewed tea. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a lot of phenolic chew and tons of savory layers, finishing long and yeasty/toasty.

Ryme Cellars Winery Image
As with all good stories, this is really about a love affair. This unique winemaking collaboration is the result of Ryan and Mega Glaab's combined love for each other and the world of wines. The couple met in Australia working as seasonal cellar hands at Torbreck Winery. They quickly fell in love and have since been married. Between the two of them, they have worked at wineries such as Pax Wine Cellars, Peay Vineyards, Sine Qua Non, and Marcassin. Their wines for Ryme Cellars are produced at the Wind Gap winery, where Ryan is the Assistant Winemaker for Pax and Pam Mahle’s newest project.

Ryan and Megan started Ryme Cellars in 2007 with one ton of Aglianico. Excited by the intensity and complexity of this wine, they embarked on producing intriguing wines of varieties that they personally enjoy. To date they make two Vermentinos, Ribolla Gialla, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Aglianico under Ryme. In 2011, Ryan and Megan wanted to expand their production to include some great Sonoma County vineyards that produce the type of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that they love to drink. For this task, they created a new label called Verse Wines, as a compliment to the more esoteric Ryme portfolio. With Ryme & Verse, Ryan and Megan aspire to make honest and expressive wines that exhibit the characteristics of the variety and place from which it came.

California

Known for elegant wines that combine power and finesse, Carneros is set in the rolling hills that straddle the southernmost parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The cooling winds from the abutting San Pablo Bay, combined with lots of midday California sunshine, create an ideal environment for producing wines with a perfect balance of crisp acidity and well-ripened fruit.

This cooler pocket of California lends itself to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Carneros is an important source of sparkling wines made in the style of Champagne as well.

A fantastic, aromatic white grape that grows with great success in Sardinia, Tuscany and in lesser proportions on the island of Corsica. Somm Secret—Vermentino is thought to be genetically identical to Liguria’s Pigato grape and Peidmont’s Favorita. It comprises a large proportion of the whites in southern France where it is called Rolle.
