Winemaker Notes

The 2006 is a blend of vineyard blocks rather than varieties and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyards in the north Valley impart the lushness of the mid-palate, while vineyards on Mount Veeder. Atlas Peak and Howell Mountain provide their firm structure. The synergistic combination of these strengths of character results in a powerfully expressive wonder-wine. Delicious middle, thorough ripeness and perfect tannin framework put this one right up with our 2001 vintage, one of the best reds we've had the pleasure to have known. Give this Cabernet a shot early-on and then put enough away to watch it develop for as long as you can give it. Inspirational in its youth, the '06 Claret will out-age most of us!

Wine Spectator
Smooth, rich and complex, this is full-bodied, with firm, focused currant, sage and dusty berry fruit that runs deep with concentration, unfolding to reveal blackberry, mineral and light cedary oak flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
