Winemaker Notes

Revana Cabernet is deep ruby in color with aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry and cassis. Hints of sweet French oak lead you into the first sip confirming this is a special wine. The wine is full, yet soft in the mouth, dense and structured with mouth coating velvety tannins. Flavors on the palate match the aromas of ripe black fruits layered with toasty, elegant oak components. The flavors persist with good balance and tremendous length.

WS 92
Wine Spectator

Sleek and well-proportioned, offering ripe currant and blackberry, mineral and tobacco flavors. Gains depth and traction, as firm ripe tannins give this a chewy, cedary aftertaste.

RP 91
The Wine Advocate

This 2002 begins slowly, as its aromatics are difficult to coax from the glass and its flavors are subtle, although they build incrementally as the wine sits in the glass. While it requires some introspection, what is there is very impressive. Deep black currant notes intermixed with notions of cedarwood, tobacco leaf and loamy soil as well as serious concentration are present in this well-delineated, medium to full-bodied, well-endowed wine. Consumers need to give it more than a superficial glance.

Revana
Located in the heart of Napa Valley, Revana Family Vineyard is a vineyard and winery estate focused on producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. For Dr. Madaiah Revana, it is the culmination of his dream to grow and craft wines of exceptional quality.

In 1997, while visiting the Napa Valley, Dr. Revana discovered a small parcel of prime vineyard land just north of the town of St. Helena. He immediately sensed the property’s potential. The area was already known for producing some of the world’s most sought after Cabernet Sauvignon, and the property’s gravelly soils, sloped pitch, and excellent exposures seemed perfect for growing grapes. Studies of the soil composition confirmed that it was an ideal location for premium Bordeaux varieties. His next step was to build a team that could implement his vision.

Bordeaux Blends

View all wine

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World, especially in California, Washington, and Australia. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and/or Petit Verdot, these are sometimes referred to in the US as “Meritage” blends. In Bordeaux itself, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in wines from the Left Bank of the Gironde river, while the Right Bank focuses on Merlot. Often, blends from outside the region are classified as being inspired by one or the other.

In the Glass

Cabernet-based, Left-Bank-styled wines are typically more tannic and structured, while Merlot-based wines modeled after the Right Bank are softer and suppler. Cabernet Franc can add herbal notes, while Malbec and Petit Verdot contribute color and structure. Wines from Bordeaux can be bold and fruit-forward or restrained and earthy, while New World facsimiles tend to emulate the former style. In general, Bordeaux red blends can have aromas and flavors of black currant, cedar, plum, graphite, and violet, with more red fruit flavors when Merlot makes up a high proportion of the blend.

Perfect Pairings

Since Bordeaux red blends are often quite structured and tannic, they pair best with hearty, flavorful, and fatty meat dishes. Any type of steak makes for a classic pairing. Equally welcome with these wines would be beef brisket, pot roast, braised lamb, or smoked duck.

Sommelier Secret

While the region of Bordeaux is limited to a select few approved grape varieties, the New World is free to experiment. Bordeaux blends in California may include Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, or virtually any other grape deemed worthy by the winemaker. In Australia, Shiraz is a common component.
