Winemaker Notes

A pale, subdued and elegant pink attracts you and pulls you in with its sensuality. The first aroma is clean, pure and almost crystalline; little by little citrus aromas subtly emerge with memories of fresh white fruit and a touch of cassis. The nose also gives rise to a certain creaminess, lending to its complexity. The clean, direct sensation of the nose changes radically in the mouth where it combines a smooth, voluminous and fruity texture with a pleasant freshness and fine bubbles. Driven by a very good balance, this long lingering cava stretches to a finish pleasantly reminiscent of fresh fruit.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The outstanding 2009 De Nit (rose) has an almost hypnotic, perfect pale hue that is worth the price alone! A blend of classic Cava varieties with 5% Monastrell, it is sourced from 30- to 40-year-old vines from the estate. The nose is very subtle and very pretty with traces of rosewater, fish scale and Morello cherries, all beautifully defined and drawing you in. The palate is crisp and tense on the entry: a minimalist rose cave that is based on freshness and poise rather than delivering fruit intensity. It is a delicate, very pretty, harmonious Cava rose that is sensual and alluring. Who needs Champagne when Cava can be as good as this? Drink now-2015+.

The light pink color runs parallel to this wine's delicate flavors, its rose petal perfume and fresh, lemony refinement. Chill it for sashimi.

Raventos i Blanc, , Spain
Raventos i Blanc
Raventos i Blanc was founded in 1986 by Josep-Maria Raventos, a member of the Codorníu family who wished to create a small, quality-oriented winery that would stand apart from the large co-ops in the area. Today they own about 300 acres of vineyards (with a high percentage of Chalk in the soil, like Champagne) planted mostly to local varieties such as Macabeo (Viura), Xarel-lo and Parellada. All three of these grapes are found in the excellent value Brut "L'Hereu".

Raventos i Blanc is the only Cava producer to estate grow and estate bottle all of their Cavas. The grapes are biodynamically farmed and certified by the Catalan Integrated Production Council (CCPI). The Cavas are found on such 3 star Michelin restaurants as El Bulli and Arzak, and represent the highest quality in Cava and an incredible value in sparkling wine.

A large and diverse wine region in northeastern Italy, the Veneto is home to a vast array of different styles of wine. With no defining regional characteristics, it can be a bit confusing to the general consumer to parse through its many subzones, but the patient wine lover will find many treasures to be discovered here, typically at wallet-friendly prices. Red and white wines are produced here, with more emphasis on the latter, as well as the ultra-popular sparkling wine Prosecco. The region is sheltered from harsh northern European winters by the Alps, which form its northern border, but the climate is still relatively cool, making the Veneto ideal for white wine production.

Much of Italy’s Pinot Grigio hails from the Veneto, where it can range from neutral and inoffensive to crisp and refreshing. Soave, made primarily from the Garganega grape, has a reputation for producing relatively ordinary, bulk wines, but can be very elegant when yields are carefully monitored, with aromas of lemon, almond, and white flowers. Valpolicella is the region’s best-known red wine, with juicy, tart red cherry flavors derived from the Corvina grape. Recioto and Amarone wines made from dried grapes are a regional specialty and can be very intense, heady, and cerebral.

Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of white grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are regional indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent wines on their own, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics and aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal, Italy, and Greece are known for having a multitude of unique varieties.
