Winemaker Notes

2014 was another classic vintage, despite the third consecutive year of drought. A mild winter and spring triggered early bud break, while much-needed late spring rain alleviated water stress on the vines through summer. Summer temperatures were warm and steady, balanced by particularly cool mornings, which permitted even fruit development. Cooler weather in August further lengthened hang time, resulting in perfectly matured fruit with moderate sugar levels.

With a Pauillac-like style in its graphite, blackcurrant, lead pencil and tobacco aromatics, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is a full-bodied, concentrated, seamless 2014 that’s very much in the style of the 2014 vintage. Despite the upfront charm, it has plenty of underlying tannin and structure and is going to evolve beautifully for 15-20 years. This cuvée is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc, aged all in new oak.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is made up of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc. It's deep ruby with a nose of graphite, dusty earth, bitter chocolate and cardamom with floral sparks, iron, crème de cassis, red and black cherries, loamy earth and star anise. Medium to full-bodied, it's lush and smooth in the mouth with loads of chocolaty fruits, very ripe, grainy tannins and great acidity, finishing very long. Lovely! 606 cases were made.

Ramey's 2014 Annum is rich, supple and juicy, with aromas and flavours of red and black fruit, menthol and chocolate. A broad, textural wine which is very much on the same level as its 2013 sibling.

COMMENTARY: The 2014 Ramey Annum Cabernet Sauvignon is a class act. TASTING NOTES: This wine is firm, well-built, and layered. Pair its persistent aromas and flavors of black fruits, dried leather, and red currants with a classic standing rib roast. (Tasted: May 13, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

A steady ascent of supple flavors rises from modest to grand. The elegant array of anise-laced currant, berry, light cedar and earth notes making a second glass a necessity. Drink now through 2030.

Ramey Winery Video

David Ramey is among a distinguished group of pioneering American vintners who revolutionized modern-day winemaking and elevated California to the forefront of the international wine community. Hailed as “Professor Chardonnay” by Wine Spectator, David’s groundbreaking work with indigenous yeasts, sur lies aging and malolactic and barrel fermentation yielded a new California Chardonnay style that was richer, more lush and silky smooth. Ramey Wine Cellars crafts exceptional expressions of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Pinot Noir from top vineyards in Sonoma and Napa.

After earning a graduate degree at UC Davis, with his thesis on how aromas evolve in wine, David Ramey pursued a hands-on education in Old World winemaking traditions. He worked at Chateau Pétrus and would later apply these time-honored methods to California’s premier vineyards. In California, David led winemaking for Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus Estate and Rudd Estate. In 1996, David and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars with the vision of crafting classically styled, elegant and balanced wines that age beautifully.

Still exclusively owned by the Rameys, the next generation is now working in the family business. Claire Ramey works with her father in pre-production and Alan Ramey leads marketing efforts. Tastings are offered by appointment in Healdsburg, California.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wines. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
