As a curiosity I also tasted the 2012 Agrícola Tinto, which is the first year he produced this wine, when the vineyard only had Bastardo, Zamarrica, Carabuñenta and Brancellao grapes, as the rest of the varieties were introduced later. This is the evolution of a wine from 2010 he calls Campo de Probas, but he has replanted more varieties. The next vintage will be 2016, and it has even more varieties (Caíño Redondo, Sousón and even some white) and higher acidity. 2012 was a warm and dry year but cooler than 2010. However, this feels riper and perhaps a little more extracted and balsamic, reflecting a different era with a different taste. It has some dusty tannins and is a little more astringent; perhaps he used more stems. Only 723 bottles were filled in November 2014.

Quinta da Muradella Winery Image

Located in the town of Verin in the Monterrei DO, Quinta da Muradella is a garage winery where properietor Jose Luis Mateo and Raul Perez make small production wines from 34 unique parcels (all certified organic). The wines made today by the local wineries no longer speak the language of the past. Due to this lost identity, Jose Luis and Raul felt the mission to recover and recapture lost varieties and genetic marterials facing extinction. In a certain way, Quinta da Muradella is a liquid book of history.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
