#28 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2018
A bouquet of dark, berried, inky fruit with plenty of sawdusty/smoky oak. Vibrant flavors of fresh blackcurrant and cassis are complemented by bay leaf and toasted oak on the palate. The tannins are well-integrated and fine-grained. This is a complete and harmonious wine with great persistence of flavor. Bright and delicious, speaking of contemporary Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Ready to drink now or for enjoying the rewards of cellaring for the next 5-7 years.

Dense, with sink-your-teeth-into-them tannins and concentration to the plum, cassis and blackberry flavors. Sage and rosemary accents linger in the background. Strikes the right balance between power and elegance, with grace notes of eucalyptus, black tea and tobacco lingering on the velvety finish. Drink now through 2030.

COMMENTARY: For most of my wine-enjoyment life, I have looked to the Napa Valley and the Left Bank of Bordeaux to satisfy my Cabernet needs. Early in the 1990s, I discovered Coonawarra to be as good as the aforementioned growing areas. The 2016 Penley Estate Phoenix is a delicious example of what this Australia area can do. TASTING NOTES: This wine is deep, yet well-balanced and finely-tuned. Its aromas and flavors of aromatic fruits and currants make it beautiful pairing choice with game birds. (Tasted: October 26, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Penley's 2016 Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon has come together nicely, yielding up balanced aromas of cedar, tobacco and cassis. It's medium to full-bodied, velvety and smooth, capturing the elusive cigar-box character as well as any New World Cabernet I've tasted recently, while remaining fruity and generous. Mature now, it should drink well for another several years.

Penley Estate is located in the center of Australia's most famous Cabernet region: Coonawarra. Continuing a family tradition that spans five generations, the winery was established in 1988 when the Tolley children continued the winemaking heritage of their pioneering families, Penfold and Tolley, both storied names in the Australian wine industry. In 1844, Mary Penfold defied stereotypes and was the driving force behind the establishment of McGill Estate. Similarly, from 1948-1961, Gladys Penfold Hyland was Penfold's Chairman of the Board. Their descendants, sisters Bec and Ang Tolley, run Penley Estate, proudly channeling the vim and might of their ancestors. Penley Estate's 240 acres of vineyards were planted atop Coonawarra's "terra rossa" soils with the aim of producing terroir-driven wines with distinctive regional character, and is now regarded as one of the region's leading Cabernet and Shiraz producers
