Winemaker Notes

The word Âme is French for "soul". It's something any winemaker or grape grower wants in their final wine. While developing the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards on our Conn Valley ranch, it became apparent that one parcel in particular stood out above the rest - literally as well as figuratively - given it was the highest elevation and rockiest parcel on the property. It took four years to develop, due to the rock removal and the steepness of the slopes. The results were worth the effort. We found that out in 2005 when the Cabernet Sauvignon crop from this block proved to be not only darker and more intense but dramatically different in aroma and flavor. We bottled it separately and called it Âme, for some our soul is certainly in it. It's important to us as well that there's some recognition of our three children, Alexandra, Michael and Elizabeth, whose first name initials make up the word.

RP 93
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The finest 2005 is the Ame (which means “soul” in French), a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee fashioned from a parcel of the estate vineyard in Napa’s Conn Valley. Perhaps because of that, it possesses more minerality along with licorice, black currant, and cedar wood notes. Dense, full-bodied, rich, and impressively endowed, with good acidity, tannin, and extract, this 600-case offering will be at its best between 2009-2018. Range: 91-93

Strong minty currant and hints of chocolate give this wine its flavor focus. Rich and concentrated, yet elegant and refined, showing off a nice black cherry and spice edge before the tannins grip. Drink now through 2013. 618 cases made.

Neyers, Napa Valley, California
2005 Ame Cabernet Sauvignon
Begun in 1992 by Bruce and Barbara Neyers and their winemaking partner, Ehren Jordan, Neyers Vineyards produces 15,000 cases of wine annually. They rely primarily on Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the Neyers' 50-acre Conn Valley ranch farmed by Hugo and Lupe Maldonado. Additioanl grapes are purchased from a select group of growers, several of which are identified on the labels of wines produced from grapes they have grown. In 1999 Neyers purchased the 30-acre Sage Canyon Winery in the foothills east of Rutherford and have developed that facility for their entire production that also includes Syrah, Grenache, Zinfandel and Chardonnay.

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
