Winemaker Notes

#54 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2014

A complex assemblage of primarily Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Brut Prestige opens with gorgeous layered white blossom aromas, followed by creamy vanilla, citrus, stone fruit and melon. With elegant acidity and crisp structure, this medium-bodied sparkling wine displays an excellent mousse and a rich, lingering finish. Refreshing acidity and fruit character makes Brut Prestige an excellent food wine.

Packs in a lot of complexity for the price, offering aromas of apple, fresh ginger and rubber. The flavors are crisp and layered, with notes of raspberry and spice.

A triumph of aromas and flavors, the Mumm Napa Prestige Cuvee is one of the very best in the marketplace; beautiful from start to finish; fresh apples aromas practically jump out of the glass, a bit of yeastiness adds complexity; superb on the palate and wonderfully crisp in the aftertaste. I have enjoyed this in the past, but this recent tasting (9/5/14), the wine showed more than I had expected.

The winery's signature sparkler, this blend of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with touches of Pinot Gris and Pinot Meunier, dazzles in rounded oak and a soft texture marked by grapefruit zest and fresh nectarine. Crisp and vibrant, it becomes richer on the finish, showing a spark of honey-baked brioche.

Mumm Napa draws from the rich heritage of Champagne Mumm of Reims, France while integrating a unique Napa Valley style to make internationally respected wines of excellent quality. Ludovic Dervin carries on the inspiration that began with Guy Devaux in making Mumm Napa wines, bringing the ripe character of Napa fruit to the forefront while maintaining the classic balance and structure necessary in an outstanding sparkling wine.

Napa Valley

View all wine

One of the world's most highly regarded regions for wine production and tourism, the Napa Valley is the AVA that brought worldwide recognition to California winemaking. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux blends. Whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that lend even more character specifics to the wines. Furthest south is Carneros, followed by Yountville, Oakville & Rutherford. Above those two are St.-Helena and the valley's newest AVA, Calistoga. These areas are situated on the valley floor and are known for creating rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. There are a few mountain regions as well, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs. Those include Howell Mountain, Stags Leap District, and Mt. Veeder. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from more time in the bottle to evolve and soften.
