Winemaker Notes

Refreshingly fruity, this Rose is like a sip of summer! It's packed with deliciously ripe summer fruits. We're talking fresh strawberries, mandarin and a hint of cranberry flowing through to a crisp, dry finish. Mouth-wateringly good! Try it with a fresh salad of mango and chopped mint with pan-seared fish and a drizzle of lime juice. Yum!

The 2016 Matua Pinot Noir Rosé is delicate and smooth. This wine offers aromatics of red fruit and flowers. Its fresh and tart palate delivers an attractive brightness leading into a finish that pairs it beautifully with a garlicky bowl of steamed clams. (Tasted: August 4, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.

The region’s king variety, Sauvignon blanc, is beloved for its pungent, aromatic character with notes of exotic tropical fruit, freshly cut grass and green bell pepper along with a refreshing streak of stony minerality. These wines are made in a wide range of styles, and winemakers take advantage of various clones, vineyard sites, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to differentiate their bottlings, one from one another.

Also produced successfully here are fruit-forward Pinot noirs (especially where soils are clay-rich), elegant Riesling, Pinot gris and Gewürztraminer.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.
