Winemaker Notes

A clear pale straw color in the glass, the Quail Hill Chardonnay emanates vibrant aromas of fresh lemon curd, Jasmine flower, honeycomb and tangerine peel. On the palate, flavors of lemon meringue and kiwi emerge leading to hints of nutmeg and wet stone. Bright acidity carries into a long finish, highlighting notes of lemongrass and pie crust.

Lots of exotic citrus, pear, flower, and honeyed minerality notes define the 2018 Chardonnay Quail Hill Vineyard, a medium-bodied, juicy, elegant Chardonnay that picks up attractive green almond and nutty nuances on the palate. It can be drunk over the coming 5-6 years with no issues.

Complex in tropical fruit and citrus, this wine offers an impressive thread of lengthy integrated acidity that boosts its fruit flavors. Stony mineral underlies a core of quince, nutmeg and ginger that add savory and spicy elements to the cohesive whole.

Connoisseurs' Guide

Rich oak may momentarily lead the way here, but it is quickly joined by the deep, optimally ripened fruit that is part and parcel of all the Lynmar Chardonnays, and, by the time this weighty, well-balanced wine finishes, its conspicuous toastiness is equaled by lasting flavors of crisp, yet juicy apples. Like its cellarmates from 2018, it will evolve favorably for some years to come, but we see it peaking a bit sooner and likely reaching its best around its fifth or sixth birthday

Russian River Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
