Winemaker Notes

A Torna dos Pasas was fermented with native yeasts in steel vats, and aged in used 300 liter French oak barrels for 12 months. It is a fresh, aromatic, and medium-bodied vinho tinto with lush and spicy flavors of red fruits, pepper, and purple flowers.

A delicious vinho tinto to pair with pork dishes, spicy foods, game, and rich fish dishes, like tuna and swordfish.

There was a phenolic touch in the nose of the 2014 A Torna Dos Pasás that made me hesitate a bit. It's a Brancellao-based blend (40%) complemented with Caíño Longo, Ferrol and Caíño Redondo from different plots of vineyards, mostly on granitic soils with yields of no more than two kilos of grapes per plant. The usual modus operandi for the reds is applied here. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts without temperature control; the wine matured in used barriques for nine to 12 months and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. This feels young, and there are abundant, slightly dusty tannins with more rusticity than usual and an earthy finish.

Known for its bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy red wines, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Most planted and respected is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
