Winemaker Notes

Luce 2006 is a dense, dark purple. The nose is rich in aromatics that privilege red berry fruit, dried plum, and blackberry, followed closely by pungent balsam and sweet notes of vanilla and, at the conclusion, by dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, pencil lead, and black liquorice. The palate is alcoholically warm, velvety smooth, and intense, with elegant tannins well supported by an emphatic vein of acidity. The finish is lengthy and harmonious.

WS 94
Wine Spectator
Very pretty aromas of cherry pie, blackberry and spices follow through to a full body, with clean, velvety tannins and a delicious, fruity finish. Turns chewy and powerful. Already hard to resist. Merlot and Sangiovese. Best after 2010.
WE 94
Wine Enthusiast
We are extremely impressed with this vintage of Luce (made by Frescobaldi and Mondavi in Montalcino, Tuscany). The blend of Merlot and Sangiovese is amazingly modern, pleasurable and penetrating with a huge focus on black cherry and chocolate fudge aromas. The tannins are tight and focused and the wine could use another five years of cellaring.
W&S 93
Wine & Spirits
Based in Montalcino, Luce della Vite began as a joint venture between the Frescobaldi and Mondavi families, now owned by the former. Luce, the flagship wine is a blend of sangiovese with merlot, one that works particularly well in the 2006 vintage. It has the bright, spicy cracked peppercorn scent of Montalcino's top sangiovese, blanced by the dark plum flesh of the merlot. It feels fresh and elegant, even as most of the flavor is still locked in the tannin, where plum-skin detail builds on the complexity of the wine. A mouthwatering match for grilled lamb, this is still youthfully tannic and will benefit from cellar time.

In 1995, Robert Mondavi of California and Vittorio Frescobaldi of Tuscany joined hands to create an Italian wine of extraordinary quality. Their partnership was the first of its kind in Italy, and their premier offering was Luce della Vite. The name means light of the vine in Italian, and was inspired by the morning sunlight on the way from Florence to the renowned winemaking region of Montalcino.

Aptly named, Luce shines brightly as the very first blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from this highly-regarded Tuscan winemaking region. Montalcino lies approximately 20 miles south of Siena, and is considered the birthplace of the richest and most intense Tuscan wines. The Luce vineyard—adjacent to Marchesi de' Frescobaldi's Castel Giocondo estate—sits at elevations of 1300 to 1500 feet, the highest vineyard site in Montalcino. Sustainable agriculture honors the unique slate and rocky limestone soils, yielding elegant Sangiovese and round, supple Merlot.

Luce inspired a second label, Lucente, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot sourced throughout Tuscany. A third label, Danzante, produces Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese/Chianti, and Merlot sourced throughout other important Italian wine regions.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
