Winemaker Notes

Nuits Saint-Georges is located in the Côte de Nuits, between the villages of Prémeaux- Prissey and Vosne-Romanée. Both these villages produce the Nuits Saint-Georges appellation. Serve with grilled red tuna, tataki beef, terrines (rabbit, pork, etc ...), moussaka, Burgundy fondue, steak tartare, roast veal, veal chop, duck breast salad, pasta and cheeses.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Louis Jadot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is an elegant and seductive wine. TASTING NOTES: This wine is quiet and alluring. Its aromas and flavors of ripe, wild strawberries, and is crisp finish should pair it nicely with grilled salmon. (Tasted: January 22, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains (Maison Louis Jadot) is also a success, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, grilled game, rich soil tones and smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with good depth and concentration, juicy acids and fine but firm structuring tannins that are classic Vaucrains.

Here too the wood treatment is less than subtle with its menthol sidekick that adds a top note to the ripe cassis, forest floor and overt sauvage-inflected aromas. The big-bodied, powerful and broad-shouldered flavors possess unusually good mid-palate density in the context of what is typical for the vintage, all wrapped in an austere, backward and explicitly built-to-age finish. Fine quality here.

Vaucrains isn't far behind the better known Les St-Georges in the line up of Nuits-St-Georges' best premiers crus, as this serious, sappy, firmly textured wine demonstrates. It's earthy, ferrous and layered, with plum and vanilla spice and a fresh, tangy finish.

Inhabiting the bottom end of the northern half of the Côte d’Or, Nuits-St-Georges is a busy, market-driven town and home to many of Burgundy’s negociants. It is also the largest town in the Côte d’Or after Beaune and contributes "nuits" to the name of Côte de Nuits (i.e., the northern half of the Côte d’Or).

The appellation itself is divided into two parts, where in the north it directly borders Vosne-Romanée, the southerly end is the commune of Prémeaux. There are no Grands Crus in this village, though it does have a large number of Premiers Crus.

The best Nuits-St-Georges Pinot Noir are layered with cherry, plum, underbrush and sandalwood. The fruit is sweet, the wine energetic, and the finish long and lush.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
