Winemaker Notes

Fortunately, we made plenty of the 2000 Quintana. In the glass it displays a stout purple edge and a deep, dark core that presage its robust but ample and juicy style. The wine is quite elegant on the nose, with aromas of black fruits and violets. Dark berry flavors dominate the flavors. This is a quite sophisticated wine, with a long and rather smooth finish that invites the proverbial second glass.

The 2000 Quintana is not the simple and fruity sort of wine generally associated with its price range. Rather it is a classic cabernet that will stand up to medium- to full-bodied cuisine and should become a staple of wine-by-the-glass programs.

Laurel Glen, California
Laurel Glen Winery Image
Laurel Glen Vineyard, a thousand feet up the slopes of Sonoma Mountain, has long been considered one of the iconic Cabernet vineyards of California. Originally planted in the 1880’s, the present-day vineyard was developed in the 1970’s by Sonoma wine pioneer Patrick Campbell. The 1st vintage of Laurel Glen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was made in 1981. The vineyard’s combination of high altitude, eastern exposure, rocky soils, and small diurnal temperature swings combine to produce very distinctive wines. Despite its small production, the wine has received international acclaim for its exceptional balance, elegance and ability to age gracefully.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
