Winemaker Notes

Opening with a mélange of blackberries, anise and cassis, this Cabernet Sauvignon is plush and textured, dominated by succulent ripe black cherry, boysenberry, roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Well-balanced, rounded tannins lead to a luxuriously long finish.

The 2013 vintage had plentiful winter rain followed by a warm spring, resulting in early bud break. A warm and occasionally hot summer continued to speed vine growth. A mildly warm fall and patience allowed for optimal hang time to achieve the complex flavors, ripeness, and power of a great vintage.

Pair with herb roasted prime rib and porcini mushroom tarts. Drink through 2035.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
More civilized and supple is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Veraison Stagecoach Vineyard, a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec and the rest smaller portions of Bordeaux varietals. The wine shows supple tannins, sweet blackberry and cassis fruit and is a much more near-term proposition for drinking than its sibling. It can be consumed now, or cellared for 20 or more years. This is a beauty.

Image of winery
Krupp Bothers winery is the dream of two brothers who nurtured a passion for wine over decades. After setting down roots in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jan - an internist with a private medical practice - pursued his winemaking as a hobby for 15 years. While continuing to commute to his medical practice, Jan moved to Napa in 1991 and began to tend grapes – first planting a vineyard surrounding his family's house and then with the help of Bart, he would develop what would become one of Napa's most iconic vineyards, Stagecoach.

In 1999, Jan and Bart founded Krupp Brothers, producing their first vintage: An extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon. Their wines begin at the source – fruit from select blocks that have been carefully chosen by Jan. Today, each wine in their collection – from the mountain Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignons to the Rhone-style Syrah and Tempranillo-based red – embody the vision and passion that has guided the two brothers. They invite you to try them.

Atlas Peak

View all wine

Just northeast of Napa city, Atlas Peak boasts some of Napa Valley’s highest elevation vineyards. Here the intense sunlight coupled with cool, nighttime temperatures produce grapes that are perfectly ripe, balanced and concentrated. The appellation is rich in volcanic soils and excels in the production of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Cabernet Sauvignon

View all wine

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the world's most planted grape variety. Inherently high in tannins and acidity, the best bottlings of Cabernet can age beautifully, with the ability to last fifty years or more. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in temperate climates like Bordeaux's Medoc region and forms the base of the Medoc reds, which are typically mostly Cabernet with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. (Enjoying a great deal of success in various regions around the world, this blend is now globally referred to as a Bordeaux Blend.) Cabernet Sauvignon has enjoyed great success throughout the world, particularly in the Napa Valley, and is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious and sought-after “cult” wines.

In the Glass

High in color, tannin and extract, Cabernet Sauvignon expresses notes of blackberry, cassis, plum, currant, spice and tobacco. In Bordeaux and elsewhere in the Old World you'll find the more earthy, tannic side of Cabernet, where it is typically blended to soften tannins and add complexity. In warmer regions like California Washington, Argentina, Chile and Australia, you can typically expect more ripe fruit flavors upfront.

Perfect Pairings

Cabernet Sauvignon is right at home with rich, intense meat dishes—beef, lamb and venison, in particular—where its opulent fruit and decisive tannins make an equal match to the dense protein of the meat. With a mature Cabernet, opt for tender, slow-cooked meat dishes.

Sommelier Secrets

Despite the modern importance and ubiquity of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is actually a relatively young variety. In 1997, DNA profiling revealed the grape to be a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc which took place in 17th century southwestern France.
