Winemaker Notes

The inky, dark blue to deep purple almost black velvet-hued wine opens to a rich sweet bouquet of exotic flowers intermixed with black currant, boysenberry, blackberry, dark plum with an enticing overlay of violets, minerals and hints of cinnamon and spice, coffee, and toasty oak. The luscious, mouth filling entry is full-bodied with superb purity, plenty of balancing tannins with sweet oak integration and a stunning and captivating perfume. With significant weight and an excellent structural foundation, the wine reveals terrific opulence and Mark Herold's deeply extracted style with great intensity and concentration with surprising elegance and lightness for such a powerful wine.

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon has closed down since I tasted it last year. Exhibiting a dense ruby/purple hue similar to the 2006's, it is restrained aromatically, but is intense on the palate, revealing full-bodied flavors (sweet black raspberries and black currants), silky tannins, beautiful fruit depth, and a long finish.

Rich and intense without being heavy, combining ripe, spicy currant and blackberry-laced fruit with hints of sandalwood and cedar, ending with a dash of anise.

In 1980, Robert Kamen, a native New Yorker, purchased 280 acres on the southwestern slopes of the Mayacamas Range in Sonoma County. This mountainous property was rugged, overgrown, extremely rocky and very remote: virgin territory with no roads and no power. It was isolated, wild, beautiful and full of potential. From the beginning, Robert had a clear concept of what he intended for his property. First and foremost was the desire to plant the highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Sonoma Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

Perhaps the most historically significant appellation in Sonoma County, the Sonoma Valley is home to both Buena Vista winery, California's oldest commercial winery, and Gundlach Bundschu winery, California's oldest family-run winery.

It is also one of the more geologically and climactically diverse districts. The valley includes and overlaps four distinct Sonoma County sub-appellations, including Carneros, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Mountain and Bennett Valley. With mountains, benchlands, plains, abundant sunshine and the cooling effects of the nearby Pacific, this appellation can successfully produce a wide range of grape varieties. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, and most notably, Zinfandel all thrive here. Ancient Zinfandel vines over 100 years old produce small crops of concentrated, spicy fruit, which in turn make some of the Valley's most unique wines. These can also be made as “field blends” (wines made from a mix of grape varieties grown in the same vineyard) along with Petite Sirah, Carignan and Alicante Bouschet.
