    Winemaker Notes

The 2013 California Pinot Noir has aromatics of ripe cherry, spice, cedar and fig. A juicy entry, good balance, and soft tannins are completed with a bright finish. The 2013 vintage was one of the greatest vintages in California for red wines. Low rainfall, a warm spring and a moderate summer allowed the grapes to achieve full ripeness and plenty of concentration from hanging on the vines for so long.

Joel Gott, the founder of Joel Gott Wines, is a fourth-generation California vintner, a lover of great food, an entrepreneur and an athlete. Born into a family of California vintners - his grandfather ran Inglenook Winery in the 60’s, and his father founded Montevina Winery in the 70’s - Joel grew up in the vineyards, and learned to drive a tractor before he could legally drive a car.

Joel’s first venture in the wine business was the Palisades Market, a boutique grocery store and wine shop in Calistoga, CA that he and his brother bought in 1993. There, he learned the art of running a business, creating food and selling wine. In particular, he recognized a growing need for quality wines in the under-$20 category.

Since Joel Gott Wines started in 1996, they have selected the best fruit from growing regions in California, Oregon and Washington which they blend to create more balanced, clean, complex, and elegant wines. They are geared towards continuing to give customers expressive and food-friendly wines at great prices

Internationally recognized for gorgeous, pure fruit combined with great elegance, California Pinot noir thrives among the state’s cooler, coastal zones. Characterized by eclectic flavors and aromas of strawberry, black cherry, plum and potpourri with notes of forest floor, mushroom or black tea, the best California Pinot noir boast a supple texture and good acidity, giving them the ability to improve with age.

Credited with the beginning of Pinot noir’s glory in California, two growers, Joe Rochioli and Joseph Swan in the late 1960s independently planted Pinot noir vineyards in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Today Sonoma County remains the leading producer of Pinot noir in the state, and Pinot noir is the leading red grape in the county, achieving its highest potential, in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.

Other coastal appellations where Pinot noir flourishes include Carneros, Anderson Valley and most of the Central Coast.
