Winemaker Notes

Approachable and bright, our J California Pinot Gris opens with fragrant

aromas of citrus, stone fruit and white florals. Fruit-forward and layered,

notes of ripe pear, apricot, white pea ch and lime on the pa late bl end with

hints of wet river rock and honeysuckle before a crisp finish. Pair this

appealing Pinot Gris with grilled fish or chicken, or a creamy chèvre topped

with citrus marmalade.

COMMENTARY: Tasting New World Pinot Gris has shown me that this grape variety can flourish in places beyond Europe. The 2018 J Vineyard & Winery Pinot Gris offers a middle ground place between Italy and France. TASTING NOTES: This wine is fresh, yet rich and substantive. Its aromas and flavors of dried earth and hard candy should pair it well with shrimp dumplings accented with slivers of fresh ginger. (Tasted: August 30, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Responsible for the vast majority of American wine production, if California were a country, it would be the world’s fourth largest wine-producing nation. The state’s diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles, and unlike tradition-bound Europe, experimentation is more than welcome here. Wineries range from tiny, family-owned boutiques to massive corporations, and price and production are equally varied. Plenty of inexpensive bulk wine is made in the Central Valley area, while Napa Valley is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious and expensive “cult” wines.

Each American Viticultural Area (AVA) and sub-AVA of has its own distinct personality, allowing California to produce wine of every fashion: from bone dry to unctuously sweet, still to sparkling, light and fresh to rich and full-bodied. In the Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate vineyard acreage. Sonoma County is best known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The Central Coast has carved out a niche with Rhône Blends blends based on Grenache and Syrah, while Mendocino has found success with cool climate varieties such as Pinot noir, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. With all the diversity that California has to offer, any wine lover will find something to get excited about here.

This “white” variety is actually born out of a mutation of Pinot Noir and shows a unique rosy, purplish hue upon full ripeness. The grape boasts two versions of its name and two generally distinct styles: the crisp, Italian Pinot Grigio and the softer French Pinot Gris. Somm Secret—Given the color of its berries and aromatic potential, Pinot Grigio is commonly used to make "orange wines." An orange wine is a white wine made with fermentation on its skins (similar to red wine making), leading to n orange hued wine with ephemeral aromas and extra complexity.
