Winemaker Notes

The traditional Hourglass aromatic markers of camphor and mint are there, though less prominently than in bright, floral vintages like 2012 and 2014. Instead, the 2015 profile leans toward the darker expression of black fruits, cassis and blackberry. A thread of dark earth and toasted hazelnut intermingle with the fruit to deliver a complex weave of aromas. The 2015 Hourglass is more dense and brooding than the past several vintages as the black fruit theme extends from the initial palate impression to the finish. The earthy dark soil minerality of the iron rich Hambright bedrock soils persists from aromatics to the palate, lending an umami richness against the interlocking mixed fruit flavors. This minerality is a signature of the vineyard and is quite consistent vintage to vintage. The ’15 is less overtly tannic than the previous several vintages, with greater silky texture. There has always been a yin/yang of energies to Hourglass; elegant vibrancy (natural acid) counterbalances richness and power. 2015 is no exception, but leans a little more toward the opulent side, as is consistent with the warmer vintage. Natural acidity creates a nice tension and lift, lending brightness and vitality to what otherwise would be a very saturated, rich wine. These counterweights act in concert to elicit greater complexity, extending the finish in a long afterthought. As tends to be true of riper vintages, the forwardness of flavors and texture reveal a wine that is very approachable while in its youth. As for cellaring potential, the common wisdom tends to favor earlier consumption in riper vintages. That said, there is incredible structure to the 2015 Hourglass that may defy common logic.

Lastly, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is the spitting image of elegance, and like the Estate 36-24-36 cuvee, grows on you with time in the glass. Cassis, currants, violets, hints of graphite and lead pencil all flow to a full-bodied, seamless 2015 that has remarkable purity of fruit, fine tannin, no hard edges and perfect balance. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades.

A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Hourglass Estate has a deep garnet-purple color and intense nose of cassis, mulberries and wild blueberries, plus suggestions of espresso, incense, licorice and bay leaves. Full-bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, it has a firm, finely grained tannic foundation and loads of spicy expression coming through on the long finish.

Rich and creamy, with mocha- and vanilla-tinged dark berry flavors, ending smooth, elegant, refined and detailed. Drink now through 2028. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Hourglass Hourglass Winery Winery Image

Hourglass wines represent a cutting-edge, modern Napa Valley winemaking style. Ned Smith bought the property in 1976 and his goal quickly shifted from fruit trees to his favorite wine, Zinfandel, with the lofty hope of supplying grapes to local wineries in exchange for finished wine. The land was eventually taken over by son Jeff Smith. In 1992, Jeff enlisted his family friend - and former rock band cohort - Bob Foley as winemaker for their new venture. Like so many aspiring guitarists, Bob had kept his day job over the years, making wine and garnering countless accolades and rock-star status for such labels as Robert Foley Vineyards, Switchback Ridge, Pride Mountain, School House and Paloma. Bob continues to make all the Hourglass wines and has the deep purple-stained hands to prove it. The calluses, however, are as much from guitar playing as his meticulous cellar work. Then, Hourglass's inaugural release came with the 1997 vintage, a seminal Napa vintage by many critics' standards.

With the christening of the winery at Blueline and its distinct single-varietal wines, Hourglass has entered an exciting new phase of its evolution. A brand synonymous with terroir-driven, modern Napa wines of the highest caliber, its goal is and will always remain the same: To capture the essence of two of Napa Valley's most expressive vineyard sites in bottled form, and to have the honor of sharing them with you and your families for decades to come.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
