    Winemaker Notes

The 2002 Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is an impressive, opulent wine with superb balance. The rich, intense color catches your eye immediately as the wine is poured into the glass. Swirl it, and take pleasure in the distinctive and enduring minty aroma that is so characteristic of this celebrated proprietary clone. This is an exciting wine from the Oakville appellation with a track record dating back to its first vintage in 1966. There is nothing like a Martha's Vineyard Cabernet – tried and true, it is a remarkable treasure from the Napa Valley.

Heitz Wine Cellars, Napa Valley, California
    2002 Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Heitz Wine Cellars has played a significant role in the history of Napa Valley winemaking since 1961. Founders, Joe and Alice Heitz, produced their first bottle of wine with a commitment to excellence that now spans three generations. Thoday, sibling team, Kathleen Heitz Myers and David Heitz, lead the family business as president and winemaker, producing wines that are recognized worldwide for their purity, balance and proven age-ability. Heitz Cellars is internationally acclaimed for the consistent brilliance of its vineyard-designated Cabernets. When Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was introduced in 1966, it was the first Napa Cabernet with the vineyard-designation on the label.

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
