Winemaker Notes

Mourvèdre was chose for the power and depth, mainly through the wines coming from this magnificent terroir called Chemin de l'Argile, below the perched village La Cadière d'Azur. They were blended with some wines produced on the limestone area, northern Saint Cyr sur Mer. Freshness comes from the grapes harvested on the late ripening terroir of Sainte Anne d'Evenos; they bring a rythm and energy in this very sunny wine where we always search for the right balance. It is achieved thanks to the unique freshness of tannins in the Mourvèdre here

Critical Acclaim

WS 90
Wine Spectator
Dark and brooding, with solid grip imparted by a licorice root coating that wraps the steeped plum, blackberry and bitter cherry fruit. Alder, savory and camphor notes line the finish, with a sanguine hint. Needs to stretch out in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2025.

Hecht & Bannier, Bandol, Provence, France
Image of winery
Formed in 2002, Hecht & Bannier makes wines intended to become reference points for the Languedoc-Roussillon, France’s largest and most confounding winemaking region. Founders Gregory Hecht and François Bannier: "To conserve the typical Mediterranean strength in our wines while preserving balance and crispness, this is our mantra for all the appellations we produce."

Provence’s leader in concentrated and age-worthy red wines, Bandol is home to the dense, deep and earthy Mourvèdre grape. Like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bandol produces characterful reds that, while approachable in their youth, are typically designed for the cellar. Given its coastal, Provencal situation, Bandol naturally produces an assortment of charming, aromatic rosés made of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Cinsault.

With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World, experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to enhance balance or create complexity, lending different layers of flavors and aromas. For example, a variety that creates a fruity and full-bodied wine would do well combined with one that is naturally high in acidity and tannins. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
