    Winemaker Notes

Hahn 2010 Cabernet begins with a pleasing aromatic mix of red berries and cassis, intermingled with lavender, allspice and brambleberry. Expressive flavors of dried cranberry, cocoa and spice are balanced by excellent texture and supple, silky tannins. Full bodied, yet smooth and mellow, it gains richness and depth on the finish.

This approachable and food-friendly wine would pair well with a honey-glazed ham, perfect for the holidays, or a flourless molten chocolate cake with raspberry drizzle and coffee ice cream.

Our founder, Nicky Hahn, grew up speaking German. In his native language, the word ‘Hahn’ means rooster, which is why a depiction of this bird has always graced the label of our Hahn wines. From the beginning, Nicky strove to produce exceptional varietal wines from Monterey County where Hahn’s vineyards and winery are located.

This assemblage of classically-styled varietal wines—along with our GSM Rhone-inspired blend—are now under the care of second-generation vintner Philip Hahn, who proudly carries on his father’s legacy. Vintage after vintage, we style our Hahn wines to be fruit-forward, balanced and supple. Our vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco AVAs are a significant source of fruit for these wines.

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
