Winemaker Notes

A touch more elegant and refined than our extremely successful 1997 which won nine gold medals, this Cabernet has a seductive aroma that almost visibly wafts out of the glass to meet you like a genie out of its bottle. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the flavors are a complex fusion of herbs, cherries and red currants. As young as this wine is now, one of the first things you may notice is the mouth-coating tannins which will soften as the wine continues to develop. In the meantime, if you happen to be granted three wishes when you pull the cork, just ask for the right time, place and company to enjoy this superb bottle of wine.

Mike Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated "Paris Tasting" of 1976 in which a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When the results where in, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen Mike’s 1973 Montelena Chardonnay as the finest white wine in the world. Mon Dieu! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike Grgich a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.

Today, in Grgich Hills' 30th year, they remain committed to creating richly flavored, distinctive wines from certified organic Napa Valley vineyards that are farmed biodynamically. By all accounts they have succeeded. The new release of Cabernet Sauvignon just received a whopping 94 rating from Wine & Spirits and the Wine News awarded "Chardonnay of the Year" honors to their 2004 vintage. These world renowned Estate grown wines from prime Napa Valley vineyards are unique, delicious, and allocated.

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked...

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
