    Winemaker Notes

    This is the Piedmontese version of the Vermentino grape, grown in a continental climate that characterizes the Fallegro wine and makes it fresh and fragrant. Halfway between still and sparkling, this lovely, crispwine has just a bit of frizzante, with notes of green apples and ripe pears.

    Ideal as an aperitif and can be easily matched to the table.

    Ever since 1847, the Colla family has worked its vineyards in an excellent area, Piedmont’s Langhe zone. The vine dresser’s work was handed down from generation to generation until it reached Paolo Colla, the fourth generation of the family, who dedicated himself with intense energy to Barolo, “the king of wines”. He realized his dream of producing Barolo in the township of La Morra, and dedicated his life to this wine.

    Already in the sixties the Barolos from Paolo Colla, full of great finesse and longevity, get major awards in major wine competitions of the time.

    In 1973 his daughter, Marivanna, married Gianni Gagliardo, a young man from Monticello d’Alba in the Roero zone on the west bank of the Tanaro river. Gianni was a passionate young man with a notable entrepreneurial talent. The love of Gianni Gagliardo for the vineyards and the Barolo is immediate. Between the two men born a deep friendship and a fruitful collaboration which is the basis of the extraordinary success that the wines Gianni Gagliardo collect worldwide. It is Paul, with paternal affection, to transmit him all the secrets on vineyards and on winery that are used to create the undisputed king of the Langhe vineyards, the Barolo.

    From the second half of the eighties, Gianni Gagliardo took the reins of the winery that bears his name, inheriting the secular tradition of the Colla family. From that moment the evolution is unstoppable. It is in fact Gianni to bring all over the world the precious family labels.

    A prestigious and distinctive region for red wines in northwestern Italy, Piedmont is responsible for some of the country’s longest-lived and most sought-after wines. Set with a backdrop of the visually stunning Alps, its most prized vines are planted at higher altitudes on the warmer, south-facing slopes where sunlight exposure is maximized. The climate is continental, with cold winters and hot, muggy summers. Despite the rain shadow effect of the Alps, precipitation takes place year-round, and a cooling fog provides moisture that aids in the complete phenolic ripening of its grapes.

    Easy-going Barbera is the most planted grape in Piedmont, beloved for its trademark high acidity, low tannin, and juicy red fruit. However, the most prized variety is Nebbiolo, named for the region’s omnipresent fog (“nebbia” in Italian). This grape is responsible for the exalted wines of Barbaresco and Barolo, known for their ageability, firm tannins and hallmark aromas of tar and roses. Nebbiolo wines, despite their pale hue, pack a pleasing punch of flavor and structure, and the best examples can require about a decade’s wait before they become approachable. Barbaresco tends to be more elegant in style while Barolo is more powerful. Across the Tanaro River in Roero and the farther north regions of Gattinara and Ghemme, provide more affordable and imminently drinkable Nebbiolo.

    Dolcetto is Piedmont’s other important red grape, ready to drink within a couple of years of release. White wines are less important here but can be high in quality, and include Arneis, Gavi, Timorasso and the sweet, charming Moscato d'Asti made from Muscat.

    Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of white grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are regional indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent wines on their own, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics and aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal, Italy, and Greece are known for having a multitude of unique varieties.
