    Winemaker Notes

    This is my twenty years of winemaking experience talking about "difficult" vintages. It is the average vineyards that suffer the most in such years, while the great vineyards somehow manage to pull it off. I am extremely fortunate to be working with some of the finest growers in California that year after year provide me with quality. My 1998 Cabernet is a testament to their efforts and attention to detail that in turn make my work infinitely easier, My 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon parallels the composition of the 1997. The fruit from Terry Wilson's Rancho Chimiles is divided between Pahlmeyer and Franus, and is consistently the deepest and most concentrated of my Cabernets. The Hyde while also rich and dark, is generally more fruity, forward, lower in tannin, and offers good acidity. The result is a wonderful balance among the components. If you know Franus at all, you know that balance is a main winemaking goal. Although the harvest of 1998 was basically a month later than 1997, all my grapes were able to reach maturity. The resulting wine is dark ruby in color and offers forward aromas of strawberries, black cherry, vanilla, and sweet toasty oak that follow into the flavors. There is ample stuffing here, but the tannins are soft and give way to an overall lush mouth impression that for me make the wine especially palatable for young Cabernet. It drinks well now, but I really think its longevity will surprise a lot of people. In fact, I think the wine itself is going to surprise a lot of people.
