Winemaker Notes

Grapes from 3 different vineyards of the Elqui Valley were hand picked, de-stemmed and crushed separately. The winemaking was as the same as the Syrah and the Carmenere. After aging in barrels and stainless steel the wines have been blended just 3 months before bottling.

Bright and deep color. The wine shows a good fruit concentration and on the nose black pepper, red fruit, dark chocolate. Great body with soft tannins on the palate.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2006 Syrah Reserva offers an enticing nose of smoke, game, and blueberry. Medium-bodied and elegant on the palate, it has layers of spicy fruit, good ripeness, and excellent length. This crowd-pleaser will evolve for 1-2 years but can be enjoyed now. It is an outstanding value.

In 1951 Aldo Olivier Granola’s family moved to Chile and in 1971 he started planting grapevines for Pisco production. Around that time Aldo became convinced of the potential for producing superb wines in this semiarid valley. The Falernia project was born after he and his cousin Giorgio Flessati, famed Italian oenologist, joined forces. Falernia is an innovative venture given that it is Chile’s most northerly wine estate, a considerable distance from the country’s main winegrowing areas. The driving force has been a passion for the wine and the challenge of transforming a tract of desert into a green vineyard with enormous potential for producing premium wines. They use the latest technology and have the support of agronomists from Chile’s top universities and worldrenowned oenologists.

Long and narrow, with a continuous coastline and the Andes Mountains along its eastern border, Chile remains an exciting frontier for wines of all styles.

The country’s wine growing regions vary widely in climate and geography from north to south. Chile’s Coquimbo region in the far north contains the Elqui and Limari Valleys, where minimal rainfall and intense sunlight are offset by chilly breezes from the Humboldt Current. Historically this region focused solely on Pisco production, but today finds success with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Aconcagua region contains the eponymous Aconcagua Valley—hot and dry and home to full-bodied red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.

Casablanca Valley and San Antonio Valley, also part of the Aconcagua, focuses on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Maipo, Rapel, Curicó and Maule Valleys produce a wide variety of red and white wines. Maipo in particular is known for Carmenère, Chile’s unofficial signature grape. In the up-and-coming southern regions of Bio Bio and Itata make excellent Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Blends of Southern Rhône, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
