Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Our Sauvignon Vigna “Castel Ringberg” shows an elegant straw yellow with light green accents. The invitingly subtle bouquet is characterized by elegant floral notes of elderflower and mountain herbs, a hint of gooseberries and an alpine freshness. With fruity fullness, elegant structure, juicy minerality, distinctive harmony and complex potential, this single vineyard Sauvignon delights.

A very spicy and smoky sauvignon blanc that shows white pepper, passion fruit, guava peel, pomelo, vanilla, bread dough and juniper berries. It is full-bodied and fleshy yet pointed and vertical, framing taut layers of generous stone and tropical fruit as steely acidity takes hold.

Hints of Marsala and white pepper accent the nose of this expressive white, while sleek, mouthwatering acidity carries the flavors of steeped apricot, pineapple, chive blossom and Meyer lemon zest. Medium-bodied and racy, with a long, creamy, mineral-laced finish. Drink now through 2028.

The 2018 Alto Adige Sauvignon Vigna Castel Ringberg is a very fragrant and aromatically articulate wine that speaks the fluent language of the variety. You get a slightly heavier accent here, with creamy overtones of lemon mousse and passion fruit, and the pungent green or sharp notes of the grape have been successfully downplayed. Citrusy fiber and freshness are followed by a brief mineral-driven interlude of crushed white stone.

Fermented partly in barriques, this opens with aromas of toasted hazelnut, crushed tomato leaf and coffee bean. The aromas carry over to the tangy palate along with grapefruit, yellow apple and saline notes.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.
