El Tequileno's founder descended from the most renowned of the Tequila families. Tequila had always been part of his name and part of his life. Having spent almost two decades producing tequila the time had come for him to pursue his dream and start his own tequila. That day was New Years 1959.
On January 1st, 1959, Don Jorge Salles Cuervo pursues his dream and establishes his own tequila. He calls it El Tequileno to honor the birthplace of tequila. In 1970, Don Jorge invites his son Juan Antonio to join the family business. To carry on his father and grandfather's legacy, Jorge Antonion Salles "Tony" joins El Tequileno. When 2008 comes around, the management of the distillery and the title of Master Distiller is passed on to Tony.
Recognized for his lifetime achievement, in 2018 Juan Antonio Salles is bestowed the title of Gran Tequilero by the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry. To date, only four people have been awarded this designation. In this same year the distillery also created the world's first reposado rare.

Tequila Reposado refers to Tequilas that have been ‘rested’, or aged, in oak barrels for a minimum of two months but not more than one year. Depending on the specific flavors a tequilero wishes to impart on the spirit, a variety of different barrels may be used, from Brandy and Bourbon, to Wine and Sherry. The time spent on the wood allows Reposado Tequilas to mellow as they age, softening and rounding powerful flavor components brought by the agave and marrying them to subtle notes of caramel and vanilla brought by the barrel itself.
