Winemaker Notes

Elegant is not a word used often to describe Zinfandel, but that is always how this wine is described. Due to the age of the vines (80-100 years old) and very low yields, Bill uses very minimal techniques and doesn't overpower the fruit with too much oak, letting the vineyard speak for itself.

This delicious Zin has thick brambly blackberry fruit with pepper, anise, clove, and other exotic spices. The wine is fat and mouth-filling with great persistence on the palate. Like all Easton Zinfandels, this wine was aged exclusively in French oak. The wine ages remarkably.

Wine Enthusiast
Delicious in cola spice and earthy tannins, this medium-bodied Zinfandel remains tightly wound but obvious in its promise of years of enjoyably structured blackberry fruit, leather and spice. A fine choice among all of Easton’s 2010 Zinfandels.

Easton, California
Easton Winery Image
Bill Easton is one of the pioneers of Amador's modern winemaking era, founding his winery in 1984, and his wines still lead the pack in terms of quality. Easton's high elevation sites reach up to 3,200 feet and contribute to the complexity of the wines.

Easton puts his name on his non-Rhône varietals wines, those that have traditionally worked the best in Amador County and the Sierra Foothills: ancient and old-vine Zinfandel, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Under the Easton label he also bottles small selections of varietals new to the Sierra Foothills: Grenache Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc.

Easton makes wines that are unique and site-specific with a sense of place all of their own. He farms and runs his winery sustainably, even relying entirely on solar power for his tasting room and winemaking facilities.

Growing some of California’s oldest plantings of Zinfandel, Fiddletown is a region of rolling hills surrounded by pine forests. While not many wineries reside within the AVA boundaries, a good number of Amador County wineries purchase Fiddletown grapes.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel is often thought of as California’s flagship grape. In fact it owns this title by having the ability to adapt to the states’ many microclimates and landscapes, producing unique expressions of the grape throughout. Zinfandel thrives in California’s Central Coast, as well throughout Sonoma County, parts of Napa Valley, the Sierra Foothills, Lodi and Paso Robles.

Zinfandel was born in Croatia and later made its way to southern Italy where it became known as Primitivo. The astute imperial nursery of Vienna collected specimens of the vine and acted as the source of its journey to New England, carried by George Gibbs circa 1829. Eventually, making its way to California around the Gold Rush of 1849, Zinfandel found its new home, parading the true American spirit.

Tasting Notes for Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a dry red wine, though typically forward in fruit. Notes of dark plum, blackberry, sweet spice, dark chocolate and licorice are common. Very ripe examples may express a dried fruit quakity like fig or prune. But Zinfandel grown in cooler, coastal zones often shows red fruit, black pepper and fresh herbal characteristics like juniper and menthol.

Perfect Food Pairings for Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a powerfully flavored wine, mingling happily with bold food like brisket, lamb shanks, pork ribs or anything barbecued. More delicate Zins work with pork, lamb curry and even Ceasar Salad or Salad Nicoise.

Sommelier Secrets for Zinfandel

Thanks to its popularity both for home winemaking and as communion wine, many Zinfandel vines were able to survive prohibition, leading to the abundance of "old vine" Zinfandels. These low-yielding, ancient vines tend to produce wine that is deeply concentrated, delicately perfumed and decidedly complex.
