Winemaker Notes

Aromas of starfruit, yellow plums and elderberry as well as juicy oranges and a herbal touch. Full bodied with an elegant minerality and the for the Doctor typical smokeyness.

Great with seafood and fish. As well an excellent partner in combination with Asian Cuisine.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2016 Riesling Berncasteler Doctor Spätlese is super clear, cool and flinty on the deep and complex nose that also shows tropical fruit aromas of passion fruit and mango. On the palate, this is an enormously rich, dense and textured Doctor Spätlese, a mouth-filling Riesling with almost 90 grams of unfermented sugar. There are tea flavors and a nice salinity in the finish. Generous and long, this has huge aging potential. 8% alcohol and 90 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted February 2018.

Wine & Spirits
Decant this to get past the sulfury reductive scents, and then it opens up to a wealth of fruit flavor, from melon to mango, with a red-apple-skin crispness that gives it definition. A slight yeastiness adds a creamy umami component, creating a bridge to grilled oysters.

The wine-growing tradition of the Thanisch family can be traced back more than 350 years. In 1636, the name was mentioned for the first time in the registers of Bernkastel-Kues. The quality of the family´s wines soon extended their excellent reputation far beyond the Mosel valley.

Quality is still the standard of the Thanisch family estate. A great part of this quality is due to the Doctor Cellar which is hewn deep into the rocks beneath the vineyard. Here all Thanisch wines are matured in tradional old oak Fuder casks at a constant year-round temperature of 8 C (45 F). Recently, the family has invested heavily into modern technology, gentle handling of uncrushed grapes and cold, controlled fermentation. The estate is today owned by Margrit Mueller-Burggraef, a grand-daughter of Dr Hugo Thanisch.

Following the Mosel River as it slithers and weaves dramatically through the Eifel Mountains in Germany’s far west, the Mosel wine region is considered by many as the source of the world’s finest and longest-lived Rieslings.

Mosel’s unique and unsurpassed combination of geography, geology and climate all combine together to make this true. Many of the Mosel’s best vineyard sites are on the steep south or southwest facing slopes, where vines receive up to ten times more sunlight, a very desirable condition in this cold climate region. Given how many twists and turns the Mosel River makes, it is not had to find a vineyard with this exposure. In fact, the Mosel’s breathtakingly steep slopes of rocky, slate-based soils straddle the riverbanks along its entire length. These rocky slate soils, as well as the river, retain and reflect heat back to the vineyards, a phenomenon that aids in the complete ripening of its grapes.

Riesling is by far the most important and prestigious grape of the Mosel, grown on approximately 60% of the region’s vineyard land—typically on the desirable sites that provide the best combination of sunlight, soil type and altitude. The best Mosel Rieslings—dry or sweet—express marked acidity, low alcohol, great purity and intensity with aromas and flavors of wet slate, citrus and stone fruit. With age, the wine’s color will become more golden and pleasing aromas of honey, dried apricot and sometimes petrol develop.

Other varieties planted in the Mosel include Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), all performing quite well here.
