Winemaker Notes

This intense Spätlese bears the characteristic purity of the vintage. It is very ripe and juicy, with a mouth-filling richness that is balanced by a firm, typically spicy minerality. At the end, there is a lovely lift to the dry finish.

This is a wonderful wine for richer foods. Its low alcohol makes it especially good with spicy Asian/fusion cuisine.

WS 92
Wine Spectator
This pure-tasting wine offers well-defined apricot, peach and quince flavors accented by spicy notes and hints of cream, with a luscious, vanilla-infused finish. Drink now through 2025.
RP 92
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Fresh strawberry and lime along with suggestions of musky narcissus and distilled herbal elixir on the nose and delicate palate of Loosen’s 2009 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese lead to a juicy, compulsively swallow-able finish threaded with salt and crushed stone. As this opens, further floral, herbal and mineral nuances emerge, and it promises to perform seductively for 25 or more years. If your taste memory doesn’t encompass last year’s rendition, you could be forgiven for asking yourself how much better a non gold-capsule Loosen Wurzgarten Spatlese could get.

Dr. Loosen
The Dr. Loosen Estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. With ungrafted vines averaging 50 years old, some of the best vineyard sites in Germany (four rated grand cru and two premier cru by both the 1868 German classification and the more current Wine Atlas of Germany), Ernst Loosen has the raw materials for stunningly intense, world-class wines. With crop yields almost half of what is permitted by law, only moderate use of organic fertilizers, and old-fashioned cellar practices, Loosen strives to create wines that unmistakably say, "Riesling, Mosel, and Dr. Loosen." In his own words, "The great winemakers I have met invariably possess a clear concept in their mind of what their wine should be. It's a vision that places terrior over technology, and grape quality over quantity. This is the level of winemaking we pursue at Dr. Loosen. Our goal is to produce wines that are luscious, complex, and true to their roots."

Napa Valley

Cabernet Sauvignon

View all wine

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
