Winemaker Notes

Erni Loosen has quickly established himself as one the premier GG producers in the Mosel Valley. This Urziger Wurzgarten GG Reserve is sourced from a 110-year-old parcel, is meticulously hand-picked, fermented bone dry from immaculate, botrytis-free fruit. It is fermented and aged in neutral oak, and garners it reserve status by being aged for 24 months on the lees, then spends another two years in bottle before release. Urziger Wurzgarten’s volcanic red soil really shines here: Fresh strawberry, yellow peach, golden delicious apple, baking spices and moist earth accentuate the aromas and flavors. Remarkable intensity and dense texture for a German riesling, really majestic. 

Try this with Coq a Vin or a rich seafood risotto. Great foil for mild cheeses as well.

Characterised by its volcanic, slatey soils with a high iron content, the vineyard of Ürziger Würzgarten has produced a really weighty, textured wine in this Reserve. It has flavours of honeydew melon, green apple and apricot skin, balanced by a subtle but vital acidity that supports the aromatic and structured palate. Due to be released on 1 November 2018, this is one to lie down for several years before opening.

The intensely yellow colored 2014 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Réserve Alte Reben is crystalline, fine and intense on the complex, elegant and very aromatic nose. After two years of sur-lie aging, this is an enormously salty, complex and grippy Würzgarten with a long, intense and complex finish that reveals the first hints of maturity in terms of fruit, whereas the structure indicates this still has a long run ahead. This is an exceptional gastronomic Riesling with great expression, length and fine tannin grip. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Cut stone and smoky mineral tones are spiced with tangs of crushed white pepper and salt in this svelte, lime-scented white. Sourced from 120-year-old vines grown on rare red, volcanic soils, it's deeply earthen yet penetrating with lemon and tangerine flavors. Matured four years prior to release (two in barrel, two in bottle), it expresses the depth of Riesling's savory side. Delicious now but should hold for at least a decade to come.

Following the Mosel River as it slithers and weaves dramatically through the Eifel Mountains in Germany’s far west, the Mosel wine region is considered by many as the source of the world’s finest and longest-lived Rieslings.

Mosel’s unique and unsurpassed combination of geography, geology and climate all combine together to make this true. Many of the Mosel’s best vineyard sites are on the steep south or southwest facing slopes, where vines receive up to ten times more sunlight, a very desirable condition in this cold climate region. Given how many twists and turns the Mosel River makes, it is not had to find a vineyard with this exposure. In fact, the Mosel’s breathtakingly steep slopes of rocky, slate-based soils straddle the riverbanks along its entire length. These rocky slate soils, as well as the river, retain and reflect heat back to the vineyards, a phenomenon that aids in the complete ripening of its grapes.

Riesling is by far the most important and prestigious grape of the Mosel, grown on approximately 60% of the region’s vineyard land—typically on the desirable sites that provide the best combination of sunlight, soil type and altitude. The best Mosel Rieslings—dry or sweet—express marked acidity, low alcohol, great purity and intensity with aromas and flavors of wet slate, citrus and stone fruit. With age, the wine’s color will become more golden and pleasing aromas of honey, dried apricot and sometimes petrol develop.

Other varieties planted in the Mosel include Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), all performing quite well here.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
