Domaine Michel Chignard Les Moriers Fleurie 2017
This is not simply a Fleurie, it is Fleurie “Les Moriers,” and les Moriers is a steep vineyard that penetrates down into the Moulin-à-Vent zone. The result is like a marriage of the two. That explosive, floral Fleurie character emerges from an intense, regal, tannic, Moulin-à-Vent chassis. It is loaded with flavor and has an intense palate feel.
Critical AcclaimAll Vintages
This offers brambly strawberry aromas with a spicy edge, too. The palate has a succulent, juicy and long, concentrated feel. Excellent depth of structure and flavor. Drink or hold.
Bright ruby. Vibrant, spice-tinged red/blue fruit and floral qualities on the deeply perfumed nose; a smoky mineral flourish adds urgency. Pliant, gently sweet black raspberry, mulberry and rose pastille flavors firm up slowly with aeration. Powerful yet lively in character, showing solid closing thrust, strong persistence and repeating mineral and floral notes.
Michel Chignard is a modest man, kind and courteous, but in every aspect of his winemaking one clearly sees a passionate perfectionist. In 2007 Michel turned the management of the family domaine over to his son Cédric, who is carrying on this philosophy with great pride and has already managed to prove himself in his first few vintages. The Chignard family is also blessed with vineyards in one of the best sites of the Fleurie appellation, Les Moriers which makes a light and playful wine, with deep, ripe fruit and finesse. They have also recently started making wine from another Beaujolais cru, Juliénas, which produces a beautiful, high-toned wine in keeping with the style of the domaine.
