    Winemaker Notes

The originality of the Massif d'Uchaux finds its roots in the special geological richness of the soil and a woody mediterranean landscape needed for a good biodiversity. The black Grenache combined with other regional grape varieties finds its ideal potential here.

Domaine Jean Deydier & Fils, France
In the late 19th century, Maurice Deydier, a cooper by trade, founded a small domaine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In the 1950s, his son Jean transformed the estate he has inherited from his father into the core of today’s Domaine Jean Deydier Les Clefs d’Or. Jean planted new vineyards and acquired others, bringing his holding to the size of 15 hectares. In 1957, Jean was awarded the medal of the Chevalier du Merite Agricole for “the loving, artisanal style of production that he brought to the development of his property, and the constant efforts he deployed to make it better.” Jean Deydier and his son, Pierre, in turn, expanded the estate to its present size of 20 hectares of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 12 hectares of Côtes du Rhône Massif d’Uchaux. Today, Pierre is aided by his daughter, Laurence, and his nephew, Jean-Francois, who represent the sixth generation of the Deydier family.

An appellation full of some of the most delightful and particularly charming reds, Côtes du Rhône Villages includes the best villages of the greater Côtes du Rhône appellation. The possibility for an appellation promotion exists for every named village but each has to achieve and prove superior quality before an upgrade will be granted. The main ones today are Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Vinsobres, Rasteau and Cairanne.

The Gigondas appellation, while sometimes producing wines with a touch of rusticity, can often rival Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Its elevations are higher and soils richer in limestone. Vacqueyras reds are more concentrated than the more general Côtes du Rhône reds and must be at least one half comprised of Grenache by law. Beaumes de Venise also includes some excellent higher elevation spots for making snappy, fruity and spicy reds but historically the appellation’s esteem came from its fragrant, sweet and golden Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.
