Winemaker Notes

The Clos Blanc, a mythical, mystical vineyard, is adjacent to the Château du Clos de Vougeot. This golden triangle, surrounded on all sides by great reds, first offered its pure, golden sacrament to its spiritual fathers, the first monks of Cîteaux, in 1110. Known as “The White Vineyard”, it is like a diamond set in the centre of rubies.

The Boisset family owns some of the rare chardonnay vines in Vougeot, farming them under biodynamics and consistently producing distinctly delicious white Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits. Of the 74 plots covering 104 acres, this monopole, across a small road to the north of Clos de Vougeot, is its most prized. Jasper Morris, MW, in an article for this magazine (October 2012), compared the soil at this site to that of Vougeraie’s holding directly across the road, where pinot noir is planted in the Clos de Vougeot: “The Clos Blanc is much lighter in color, with more chips of limestone evident. The underlying rock is different too, being an unusual salmon pink conglomerate of the Oligocene period, not seen in Clos de Vougeot or other adjoining vineyards.” The monks who are said to have planted this site to white grapes in 1110 would have probably donned sunglasses to taste this 2015. It’s powerfully compressed, blinding in its white-lime acidity, a cool, crisp evocation of the soil. Flinty in its youthful reduction, there’s something ineffably refreshing about this wine.

A layer of smoke adds depth to lemon cake, citronella and floral aromas and flavors in this intense white. Sleek and vibrant, with a long, lemon zest aftertaste. Best from 2020 through 2027. 1,119 cases made.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2015 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot is a very pretty wine which will appeal to anyone who privileges freshness and delicacy, wafting from the glass with a detailed bouquet of pear, preserved citrus, citrus zest and a subtle framing of toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, built around a bright line of acidity and decidedly fine-boned, carrying very little texture for a 2015, but with plenty of intensity and cut and no sense of meanness or asperity. The finish is long and stony. It will be interesting to see how it evolves in bottle. At fully 13,428 bottles, this is one of Domaine de la Vougeraie's largest cuvées.

Le Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded in 1999, uniting under a single signature the 91 acres of vineyards owned by the Boisset family. Our vineyards are in 30 different appellations in the Côte d'Or, with two-thirds in the Côte de Nuits and one-third in the Côte de Beaune. Our first vineyard, purchased by Jean-Claude and Claudine Boisset in 1964, is the single vineyard Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Evocelles", and our latest jewel, the Vougeot Premier Cru "Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot" Monopole is part of our 24 acres in the Vougeot appellation. Pierre Vincent, our winemaker, focuses on the pure expression of Burgundian terroir using organic farming and biodynamics, respecting the environment and making truly unique wines. We are proud to announce that 100% of our vineyards are certified organic by Ecocert since the 2007 harvest.

Containing the largest Grand Cru in all of the Côte d’Or, Vougeot, the village, takes its name from the small stream flowing through it, called Vouge. Over three quarters of the village retains Grand Cru status, and a single vineyard at that: Clos de Vougeot (or simply, Clos Vougeot). Its mass—over 50 ha—retains the single name chiefly for historic reasons.

But today, Clos de Vougeot contains over 80 owners and shows significant soil and slope variations within its boundaries. The top, bordering Musigny and Grands Echezeaux, is calcareous and gravelly on oolitic limestone and exhibits wonderful drainage. The middle sections are limestone, gravel and clay with less of a slope. The lower part has little slant and is mostly made of clay. Historically the diverse parcels were blended but today the abundance of owners means that everyone has his own style. Exploring and understanding them is part of the allure of Clos de Vougeot.

In general a fine Clos de Vougeot when young will be dense and dark but juicy, with a pronounced austerity, and needs a good ten years to bring it to its full potential.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
