Winemaker Notes

Green apple skin with a touch of apple compote. Racy acidity, some weight in the palate (due to the warm vintage) and plenty of lovely length.

Rémus is now the domaine's 'entry' level cuvée but for many years it was the main cuvée, before the single vineyard range was developed, and Les Dix Arpents was the 'entry level' wine. Rémus is a blend of various plots including wine from single vineyards that doesn't make the grade. Everything is picked by hand and sorted in the vineyard. The 2019 has clean citric notes, is quite richly textured and well balanced with freshness on the finish. It is very approachable now but has the potential to develop further. A good aperitif or with grilled fish.

Domaine de la Taille Aux Loups Jean-Philippe Blot and His Father Jacky Winery Image
A new star has emerged in the heart of the Loire Valley: he is Jacky Blot of Domaine de la Taille aux Loups, in Montlouis and Vouvray. Montlouis is located on the southern bank of the Loire, opposite Vouvray. Blot, originally a Loire wine broker by profession, acquired about 8 hectares of 50-75 year old vines in 1989. These prized, ancient parcels belonged to families that could no longer continue to cultivate the vines and so entrusted them to Blot and his team. Blot brought a passion and exacting determination to make wines of only the highest quality, well beyond the norm of the day. Now more than 25 years on, Blot is the acknowledged pioneer of the region and is credited with having taken Chenin Blanc to unprecedented heights of quality.

On the south bank of the Loire River, below Vouvray, Montlouis produces all styles of Chenin blanc from bone dry, off-dry, sweet, oak aged and even the sparkling Montlouis Mousseux and Montlouis Pétillant Naturel. Soils here are lighter and sandier compared to Vouvray.

Unquestionably one of the most diverse grape varieties, Chenin Blanc can do it all. It shines in every style from bone dry to unctuously sweet, oaked or unoaked, still or sparkling and even as the base for fortified wines and spirits. Perhaps Chenin Blanc’s greatest asset is its ever-present acidity, maintained even under warm growing conditions. Somm Secret—Landing in South Africa in the mid 1800s, today the country has double the acreage of Chenin Blanc planted compared to France. There is also a new wave of dedicated producers committed to restoring old Chenin vines.
